Heather De Kok, AAF, AIFD, CFD, PFCI, began working in the floral industry alongside of her parents at an early age. Skip and Caren Kerr owned the first Grower Direct Fresh Cut Flowers location in Canada, and Heather’s love and appreciation for flowers quickly grew right along with the lovely blossoms while working in her parents’ store. At the age of 21, Heather took the plunge and invested in her own flower store to carry on the family tradition. Heather’s Awards and Honors Heather’s hard work and commitment to the flower industry was honored in July 2007 when she was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) at their national symposium. She was additionally inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) that same year at the Society of American Florists (SAF) 2007 annual convention. Heather participated in the design of two award-winning floats that appeared in the 2008 Tournament of Roses parade held in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day. She also appeared as a featured designer for Toronto later that year in “Flowers Canada,” and has performed several shows out of her home in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Also in 2008, Heather served as a judge for the Sylvia Cup Competition, the longest running annual and live national floral design competition in the industry. In September 2009, Heather became the first and only Canadian florist to be inducted into the Professional Floral Communicators International (PFCI). This honor is bestowed upon professional florists who exhibit intense talent, knowledge, and effective communication within the floral industry, as well as present outstanding demonstrations. Only 126 professional florists worldwide are presented with these exclusive and honorary letters. Most recently, in 2011, Heather was privileged to work with top designer, Rene Van Rems, on “Rene’s Bouquets for Brides,” a highly anticipated book in which many of Heather’s exquisite designs will be featured. Heather was delighted and honored to represent Canada in July of 2011 at “The Americas Cup of Floral Design” held in Brazil. She placed third in the “People’s Choice” award at this international floral design competition and was privileged to compete alongside some of the world’s most talented florists. Heather’s Involvements Heather stays actively involved in her community and is currently serving as the 2010-2011 president of the local Rotary Club, of which she has participated as an active member since 2001. She also enjoys teaching a program called “Flowers for Kids,” in which she visits elementary schools and teaches the children about flowers.
